New Zealand Itinerary

Day 1: January 8, 2027

Arrive Auckland

Upon your arrival at Auckland International Airport and after completing customs formalities, you will be met by a Southern World New Zealand representative Guide. You will then be transferred via a Private 16-seater Luxury Mini Coach to your accommodation at the Mövenpick Hotel Auckland for a two-night stay in Superior Rooms. Please note that check-in time is at 3:00 PM, and pre-registration is not included. The hotel is ideally situated in the heart of the Auckland waterfront district, offering spectacular views of the harbor and city, and is within walking distance of shopping, restaurants, the Viaduct Harbour, and ferry terminals. Your guide will be available to assist you with a walking tour around the central city and provide dinner recommendations; dinner is at your leisure. Your stay includes full breakfast for two mornings. You can also enjoy the panoramic views from the hotel's top-floor dining establishment, the Boda Restaurant and Bar.

Day 2: January 9, 2027

Auckland to Waiheke Island

This morning, you will meet your guide and take a very short walk (approximately 1/4 mile) to the ferry terminal. Here, you will board your reserved Ferry Service from Auckland to Waiheke Island. Enjoy a scenic, 40-minute cruise through the beautiful Hauraki Gulf to Waiheke Island. This stunning 92-square-kilometer island, just off the Auckland coast, is known for its beautiful beaches, vineyards, olive groves, native bush, and laid-back seaside villages. Upon arrival, you will embark on a Full Day Private Group Scenic and Wine Tour. This tour includes a scenic drive around the island and wine tastings at two boutique vineyards (with the option to substitute one vineyard visit for an olive oil mill). Following the tour, you will be treated to a relaxing two-course vineyard lunch, which includes your choice of a glass of wine, beer, or a non-alcoholic beverage.

Day 3: January 10, 2027

Auckland – Hobbiton – Rotorua

After leaving the “City of Sails” (Auckland), the journey heads south through the Waikato Region, known for its fertile farmland and dairy industry, with scenic views of the Kaimai Range. Along the way, you pass through Matamata, famous for horse breeding and as the filming location of Hobbiton from The Lord of the Rings.

You then travel along the Thermal Explorer Highway toward Rotorua, where geothermal activity becomes evident with geysers, mud pools, and sulphur-rich landscapes.

At 11:40 am, you’ll take a 2.5-hour guided tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set, including lunch. The tour features iconic locations like Bag End and the Green Dragon Inn, along with insights into how the films were made.

Finally, you arrive in Rotorua, a geothermal hotspot rich in Maori culture and known for natural attractions and trout fishing. The day ends with dinner and an overnight stay at the Millennium Rotorua Hotel.

Day 4: January 11, 2027

Rotorua

Following breakfast at your hotel, your day begins with the Te Rā - 90 Minute Guided Tour + Hāngī Buffet Lunch at Te Puia. This tour guides you through the New Zealand Māori Arts & Crafts Institute, Rotowhio Pā, the Kiwi Conservation Centre, and the Te Whakarewarewa geothermal valley, including the famous Pōhutu geyser. A world-famous hāngī buffet lunch will be served at Pātaka Kai Restaurant, Bar & Café (beverages are at your own cost). The afternoon is at leisure, offering an option to visit one of Rotorua's thermal bathing springs, such as Wai Ariki or Polynesian Spa (pre-booking is available). In the late afternoon, your guide will take you to Eat Streat, where you can dine at your leisure. Later in the evening, you will meet up for a nighttime outing to experience the Redwoods Treewalk Nightlights: a half-kilometer-long walkway of 21 suspension bridges suspended between Redwood trees, with heights ranging from 6 to 12 meters, offering a captivating, illuminated experience of the majestic forest.

Day 5: January 12, 2027

Rotorua: Waimangu Valley

After breakfast, the day offers two sightseeing choices: exploring the Waimangu Volcanic Valley and visiting Huka Falls in Taupo, or taking a short hike to Tarawera Falls. If choosing Waimangu, you will explore the world's newest eco-system, created by the 1886 eruption of Mt Tarawera, showcasing significant geothermal activity, NZ flora, and bird life. The valley features mainly downhill/flat walking options, ranging from 1.5km (key features) to 4km (all features plus a view of Lake Rotomahana), with an optional uphill hike on the Mt Haszard Trail and a shuttle bus available to minimize walking.

Day 6: January 13, 2027

Rotorua – Christchurch

Following breakfast and check-out from the hotel, the group will be transferred to Rotorua Airport for a domestic flight to Christchurch (Ōtautahi). Upon arrival, a private 16-seater mini coach and driver will meet the group and remain with them until departure. The day in Christchurch will feature the "Kai Bites: Christchurch central exploration and tastings" tour, a 2.5-hour inner-city walking experience that blends cultural discovery with local food sampling. The tour begins with a traditional Māori welcome (mihi whakatau and karakia), emphasizing the principles of hospitality (manaakitanga) and connection (whanaugatanga) through shared food (kai). A guide will share Māori and settler stories as the group walks along the city laneways and river, enjoying personally selected iconic kiwi flavors and finishing with a lunch prepared from seasonal local produce. Day 7: January 14, 2027

Christchurch

Following breakfast at the hotel, the day is dedicated to a sightseeing trip to Akaroa, involving a three-hour round-trip drive from Christchurch. The journey traverses semi-rural landscapes, skirts the base of the Port Hills, passes the ecologically and culturally important Lake Ellesmere, and continues inland through Little River village, culminating in a stop at the 'Hilltop' lookout for stunning views of Akaroa Harbour and the volcanic terrain before descending into Akaroa village. The highlight of the day is a 2-hour Akaroa Dolphins Cruise, conducted on a stable, hydrofoil-equipped vessel, designed to offer a personalized experience with close encounters with marine wildlife. The cruise navigates past sea caves, volcanic formations, and high cliffs, seeking out the rare and smallest Hector's dolphin, alongside fur seals, little blue penguins, and various seabirds. After the cruise, the group will return to Christchurch, where dinner is scheduled at leisure.

Day 8: January 15, 2027

Christchurch – Mt. Cook

The day begins with breakfast and check-out from the Christchurch hotel, commencing the three-hour drive across the Canterbury Plains towards Aoraki/Mount Cook Village. The journey involves crossing the massive Rakaia, New Zealand’s longest bridge over a 'braided river,' and passing through the sheep and wheat farming center of Ashburton before turning inland at Geraldine towards the Mackenzie Basin. The scenic drive continues to Lake Tekapo, where the group will enjoy a hosted lunch and traditional Pavlova on the shores of the beautiful turquoise lake, near the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd. Following lunch, the route continues past Lake Pukaki, following the Tasman River into Mount Cook Village, which is situated within Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, a vast 70,013-hectare expanse featuring New Zealand's highest mountain and the majority of its largest peaks and glaciers. After dinner in the hotel's Alpine Dining room, the evening concludes with the Big Sky Stargazing experience; on a clear night.

Day 9: January 16, 2027

Mt. Cook – Queenstown

After a hotel breakfast, the journey from Aoraki/Mount Cook to Queenstown begins with a 3.5-hour drive through the Mackenzie Country, past Lake Pukaki, over Lindis Pass, and through Tarras and Cromwell. The route then follows the Kawarau River into the mountainous terrain leading to Queenstown, where a stop is made at the Gibbston Valley for wine tasting and lunch before final check-in at the Copthorne Hotel & Resort Lakefront. The resort, which includes a 3-night stay in a lakeview room and three breakfasts, is situated on the shores of Lake Wakatipu in a town known for its alpine setting and vibrant atmosphere. 

Day 10: January 17, 2027

Queenstown – Milford Sound – Queenstown

This full-day excursion from Queenstown to Milford Sound begins with an early morning four-hour scenic coach journey through the stunning landscapes of Fiordland National Park. The drive skirts Lake Wakatipu, passes the Remarkables mountain range, goes through Kingston and Mossburn, and offers panoramic views of Lake Te Anau before continuing along the scenic Milford Road. Highlights along the way include the Avenue of the Disappearing Mountain, the Mirror Lakes, and the rough-hewn Homer Tunnel, which leads into the 22-kilometer-long fiord dominated by Mitre Peak. Upon arrival, participants board a boutique, 1.75-hour small boat cruise, limited to 75 passengers for a more personal experience. The uncrowded cruise, guided by locals, stops at points of interest such as the Hanging Gardens, Fairy and Stirling Falls, and local seal colonies, providing opportunities to see New Zealand fur seals, dolphins, and the rare Fiordland crested penguin. For those looking for adventure, there are two optional jet boat experiences: the Half Day Wilderness Safari offers an exciting four-hour journey up the Dart River's braided channels, surrounded by glacial valleys and snow-covered peaks, including a chance to walk through ancient beech forests (some recognized from The Lord of the Rings films). Alternatively, the hour-long Shotover Jetboat Ride provides a thrilling high-speed trip through the narrow canyons of the gold-bearing Shotover River, famous for its close-range maneuvers and signature 360° spins. A more tranquil, but still active, optional activity is the Half Day Private Wakatipu Hike, a four-hour guided tour led by local experts who will customize a two-to-three-hour bush walk suitable for your fitness level, offering deep knowledge of the Southern Lakes area.

The area, including the Yarra River/Birrarung, holds great cultural and spiritual significance for the Kulin people, who have cared for this region for over 40,000 years.

You will be met by your local guide who will be traveling with you for the next 10 days. Phillip Island

Melbourne Sightseeing – Afternoon Phillip Island and Penguins: Travel two hours by coach to Phillip Island, home of the largest colony of fairy penguins. This natural reserve is home to koalas, seals, mutton birds, pelicans and gulls in their natural habitat. See Port Phillip Bay and bay side suburbs en-route, visit the Koala Conservation Centre, and the Visitor Information Centre to learn about the animals. Observe the Penguin Parade as the Little Penguins march to their nesting places. The tour returns via Cowes with a dinner stop (own expense) before returning to Melbourne. Note: bring a warm sweater or blanket as evenings can be cool.

Phillip Island Nature Parks – Penguins Underground Viewing: Experience an underground viewing and see Little Penguins at eye-level through a 25 metre viewing window as they make their way along the Penguin Highway. Cairns/Gimuy is a tropical gateway on Trinity Bay, close to the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree National Park, both rich in natural beauty and cultural significance. The city offers a range of accommodation, cafes and restaurants.

On arrival at Cairns Domestic Airport, the Down Under Coach Charter will transfer you to Port Douglas once passengers and luggage are assembled.

Port Douglas: Accommodation at Peppers Beach Club Port Douglas, located near Macrossan Street and Four Mile Beach. Stay in a Spa Suite for 3 nights, including porterage and full breakfast, with contemporary rooms set among tropical gardens and water features.

Hotel pick up and drop off, morning and afternoon tea, buffet lunch, snorkelling equipment, optical mask, seasonal lycra snorkelling suits, wet suits, floating devices, instruction and in-water assistance, guided snorkel tour, glass bottom boat viewing, reef interpretation and Environmental Management Charge (EMC) are included.

Your 9-hour tour begins with a transfer to Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina, where you board a yacht and sail to the Coral Cays of Mackay or Undine Reefs, enjoying views of the coastline and Daintree mountains. At the reef, activities include snorkelling with a marine biologist, a guided snorkel tour, and a glass bottom boat viewing. Small guest numbers allow for personal interaction with guides, with expert guiding and friendly crew included.

What to bring: swimwear, towel, sunshirt, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, camera, and cash or credit card.

Note: Passengers must complete a Medical Declaration Form to snorkel. At risk or high-risk snorkellers (including those over 70, with health issues, or limited swimming ability) may not be suitable. A medical certificate may be required if unsure.

Day 6: January 24, 2027

Daintree | Cape Tribulation 

Hotel pick up and drop off, lunch, morning tea, tropical fruit ice cream at the Daintree Ice Cream Company, 1 hour Daintree River cruise, and a guided National Park boardwalk tour are included.

This 8-hour tour travels north via Mossman to Cape Tribulation. Visit the Daintree River for an informative cruise, then ascend the Alexandra Range to explore the rainforest on an elevated boardwalk with time for photos and wildlife spotting, including the rare Southern Cassowary. Stop at Cape Tribulation Beach for a stroll and views where the “Rainforest meets the Reef.” Return south, crossing the Daintree River and transfer back to your Port Douglas accommodation.

Sydney Sightseeing – Full Day Sydney Zoo and Blue Mountains (including lunch): Meet your guide and travel by private coach via the western areas of the city. There are flights inside both countries, plus a flight between them. There is a 3.5% added fee for using credit cards. Checks & bank drafts preferred. Most high-quality cruises & tours cost $5,000 per person per week. This trip will allow you to get out of cold weather for 3 glorious weeks.
